Science, Naturalism, and Miracles: Creation, Scientific Explanation, Methodological Limits, and the Possibility of Divine Action
what science is, what it cannot decide, why naturalism is not a discovery of the laboratory, and why miracles remain an open question
Has science buried God? Many of our neighbours assume so: that the success of scientific explanation has squeezed divine action out of the world, that the laws of nature forbid miracles, and that believing in the resurrection means believing against the evidence. This course examines those assumptions with care. Science is one of the great gifts of God to image-bearers — a disciplined way of studying the ordered creation — and Christians have every reason to honour it. But science describes the world's regularities; it does not legislate what the world's Maker may do, and the claim that nature is all there is comes not from any experiment but from a philosophy wearing a lab coat. The biblical picture is richer: a contingent, ordered, intelligible creation upheld by the faithful Word of God — a world in which science is possible precisely because God is rational, and miracles are possible precisely because God is free.

Neither science-worship nor science-fear
Christians face two opposite temptations when science enters the conversation.
Science-fear treats the laboratory as the enemy — suspicious of evidence, defensive about every discovery, retreating into a faith that hopes the data will go away. This dishonours the God who made an intelligible world and commanded us to study it.
Science-worship (scientism) treats the laboratory as the only oracle — as if nothing were real or knowable except what the sciences can measure. This is not a scientific finding but a philosophical creed, and it cannot pass its own test.
The better path holds both truths at once:
Science is a gift of God and a calling of image-bearers.
The world is ordered because its Maker is faithful, and intelligible because its Maker is rational.
Science describes how creation ordinarily runs; it cannot decree what the Creator may do.
Naturalism is a philosophy, not a laboratory result.
Miracles are rare by definition and are weighed by evidence, not excluded by decree.
The resurrection of Jesus is a historical claim, with historical evidence, and it will bear examination.
1. Science, naturalism, and miracles fairly introduced
Three words dominate this conversation, and each needs a careful definition before any argument begins — because most of the heat in science-and-faith debates comes from these words being used in slippery ways.
Science is the disciplined study of the natural world through observation, measurement, hypothesis, experiment, and revision. It works by finding regularities — patterns that hold again and again — and building testable models of them. Its track record within that domain is glorious, and Christians should say so without hedging: antibiotics, optics, genetics, spaceflight. Nothing in this course belittles any of it.
Naturalism is the philosophical claim that nature is all there is — no God, no soul, no purpose behind the cosmos; physical reality is the whole of reality. Notice the category: this is a thesis about everything, not a result from any experiment. No instrument reads "no God" on its dial. Whether naturalism is true is a philosophical question, to be argued with philosophical tools — which is why Courses 05 and 06 matter here.
Miracle, in the biblical sense, is an extraordinary act of God — a sign (σημεῖον), wonder (τέρας), or mighty work (δύναμις) — done in the world he upholds, for revelatory and redemptive purposes. A miracle is not magic, not a random anomaly, and not a "violation" of laws that stand above God; it is the Author writing differently on a page he never stopped writing.
And one distinction underneath them all: the difference between how the world ordinarily runs and what is ultimately possible. Science addresses the first with great authority. The second belongs to metaphysics — and to God. "Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them" (Ps 111:2) — a verse carved, famously, over the door of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge. "It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out" (Prov 25:2). Scripture commends the searching; it simply denies that the search exhausts the Searcher's world.

2. Why this conversation matters in apologetics
For many of our neighbours, "science" is the single biggest reason Christianity feels unbelievable. Long before they weigh any argument, they carry an atmosphere — absorbed from school, documentaries, and the internet — in which faith belongs to the childhood of the race and science to its adulthood; in which miracles were credible only to people who did not know how babies are made or what causes lightning; and in which every gap God once filled has been closed by an equation. The apologist who cannot speak calmly and knowledgeably into that atmosphere will lose the conversation before it starts.
Listen for how much philosophy hides inside seemingly scientific objections:
"Science has explained the world without God." — Which discipline ran that experiment?
"Miracles violate the laws of nature." — What is a law of nature, and who keeps it?
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." — Who decides what counts as extraordinary, and on what priors?
"Only what can be scientifically verified is real." — Is that statement scientifically verifiable?
"Religion and science have always been at war." — Is that history, or a myth with a history?
"Evolution makes a Creator unnecessary." — Does a mechanism explain away its Maker?
None of these is a result you could publish in a journal; each is a philosophical claim riding on science's prestige. The Christian task is not to quarrel with the science but to make the smuggled philosophy visible and weigh it in the open. Paul's diagnosis applies: what can be known about God from the made world is plain — "his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made" — and the suppression of that knowledge is a matter of the heart before it is a matter of the lab (Rom 1:18–25; cf. Acts 17:24–31).
Do not make the Bible a science textbook — or science a bible
Two symmetrical mistakes poison this conversation. The first reads Scripture as if its purpose were to anticipate modern physics, then panics or contorts when the genres do not match. The Bible speaks truly, but it speaks in the language of observation and covenant, to every culture and century, about the God who made all things — not in the idiom of peer review. The second treats current scientific consensus as an infallible magisterium, forgetting that science's glory is precisely its revisability. Hold Scripture as the final authority on what it teaches, hold science with gratitude and appropriate openness to revision, and refuse to let either be caricatured into the other's job.
3. Christianity and the rise of science
It is one of the better-kept secrets of the modern world that science as a sustained, self-correcting enterprise arose once in history — in medieval and early-modern Europe, in a culture saturated with Christian doctrine — and that this was not an accident. Historians of science (including many with no religious commitments) have largely abandoned the old "warfare" story in favour of a more interesting question: what convictions made experimental science seem worth doing at all? Several of the load-bearing ones are biblical.
The world is rational, because God is rational. Creation by the λόγος (John 1:1–3; Heb 1:1–3) implies a cosmos that embodies reason — and so can be expected to reward rational investigation.
The world is orderly, because God is faithful. "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease" (Gen 8:22); God has established "the fixed order of heaven and earth" (Jer 33:25). Regularity is covenant faithfulness, not blind necessity.
The world is contingent, so it must be observed. Because God created freely, the universe did not have to be the way it is; its details cannot be deduced from an armchair, as Greek rationalism hoped, but must be checked by experiment. Contingency is the soil of empiricism.
The world is not divine, so it may be examined. Genesis 1 demotes sun, moon, and stars from gods to lamps. A de-divinized creation can be probed, dissected, and measured without sacrilege.
Studying it honours its Maker. "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Ps 19:1); the catalogue of creatures in Job 38–41 and Psalm 104 is an invitation to wonder that became, in believing hands, an invitation to natural history.
This is why so many architects of modern science — Kepler, who called his astronomy "thinking God's thoughts after him"; Boyle, who endowed lectures in defence of the faith; Newton, who wrote more theology than physics; Faraday, Maxwell, Pasteur, Kelvin — worked not in spite of their Christianity but out of it. The point must not be overclaimed: Christian culture also resisted some discoveries, other civilizations made brilliant contributions, and a believing scientist proves Christianity true no more than an unbelieving one proves it false. The modest, defensible claim is this: biblical doctrine supplied a congenial — arguably the congenial — cradle for science, and the popular story in which faith and science are natural enemies is bad history (taken up at Section 15).
4. What science is — and what it cannot decide
To honour something rightly you must know its shape. Science's power comes precisely from its self-limitation: it brackets vast questions in order to answer narrow ones with rigour. The method — observe, hypothesize, predict, test, revise — is a magnificent machine for studying repeatable, measurable regularities of the physical world. But by its own design, there are whole classes of question on which it is silent — not because they are unimportant, but because they are not its kind of question.
Logic and mathematics. Science presupposes them; it cannot establish them. No experiment proves modus ponens — every experiment uses it.
Metaphysics. Why is there something rather than nothing? Is nature all there is? These are not laboratory questions (Course 05).
Morality. Science can describe what people do; it cannot derive what they ought to do (Course 07).
Aesthetics and meaning. The spectrometer reads the sunset's wavelengths, not its beauty or its point.
The reliability of reason itself. Trusting our cognitive faculties is a precondition of doing science, not a conclusion of it.
Unique past events. History — including the resurrection — is investigated by testimony and inference, not by rerunning the event.
The existence and acts of God. A method calibrated to natural regularities cannot, even in principle, rule on what transcends them.
None of this is a complaint against science; it is a description of a tool. A metal detector is superb at finding metal, and finds no plastic — from which it would be folly to conclude that plastic does not exist. The instrument's silence about what it is not built to detect is not evidence of absence. So when someone says "science has found no God," the right reply is gentle: of course not — and it has found no numbers, no duties, no beauty, and no yesterday either. The question is whether the method's scope was ever the measure of reality.

5. Methodological naturalism and metaphysical naturalism
Here is the single most useful distinction in the whole science-and-faith conversation, and it repays careful learning.
Methodological naturalism is a working rule of scientific practice: when doing science, look for natural causes of natural events. The chemist does not write "and then a miracle occurred" in the third step of the mechanism; the meteorologist explains the storm by pressure systems, not by direct appeal to Providence. Christians can affirm this rule for ordinary scientific work without anxiety — indeed they have special reason to, since they expect God's ordinary government of the world to be regular and law-like (Gen 8:22). The doctrine of providence predicts exactly the kind of stable secondary causation that science investigates.
Metaphysical naturalism is something else entirely: the philosophical doctrine that natural causes are the only causes there are — that nature is a closed system and God does not exist. This is not a working rule; it is a worldview.
The decisive point: the success of the first does nothing to establish the second. That a method which looks only for natural causes finds only natural causes is not a discovery; it is an echo. The fisherman whose net has three-inch holes should not conclude that the sea contains no fish smaller than three inches. Yet an enormous amount of popular atheism consists in precisely this move — sliding from "science methodically brackets God" to "science has shown there is no God," as if the bracketing were a finding. When the slide is made visible, most people can see it.

One refinement keeps this honest. Methodological naturalism is a sound default for studying the world's ordinary course, but it must not harden into a rule for history — a decree that no testimony, however strong, may ever support a divine act. Whether God has acted extraordinarily at a particular point (an empty tomb in Jerusalem, say) is a historical question, answered by evidence, not by a method calibrated for repeatable events. Keep the lab rule in the lab.
6. Scientism and its self-defeat
Scientism is the claim that science is the only source of genuine knowledge — that what cannot be established by the scientific method is either false, meaningless, or mere opinion. It is the engine inside slogans like "I only believe what science can prove" and "faith is belief without evidence." And it has a famous structural problem, which the student should learn to state gently and precisely:

This is not a debater's trick; it is the same self-referential collapse that sank logical positivism's "verification principle" two generations ago, conceded in the end by the positivists themselves. And the point is not that science is small — it is that knowledge is large. We know that torturing children for fun is wrong, that 7 + 5 = 12, that our colleague is trustworthy, that Caesar crossed the Rubicon, that we are now conscious — moral, mathematical, personal, historical, and introspective knowledge, none of it delivered by laboratory method, all of it knowledge. Science floats on a sea of knowledge it did not create: the validity of logic, the reliability of the senses, the honesty of testimony (every scientist trusts thousands of reported results she never reran), the uniformity of nature itself.
Notice, finally, that scientism is not humble where Christianity is proud, but the reverse. The Christian claims that a rational God made both the world and the mind, so that knowledge of many kinds is possible. Scientism claims that one method — wielded by one recently evolved primate species — exhausts reality. The first is a reasoned account of why science works; the second is a creed that cannot account even for itself.
7. Creation, providence, and the laws of nature
Everything in the miracles debate turns on a prior question almost nobody asks: what is a law of nature? Two pictures compete.
On the first picture — inherited from deism — the laws are a kind of cosmic machinery: God (if he exists) built the clock, wound it, and left it to run. On this picture a miracle is a "violation," an outside force breaking into a closed mechanism and snapping its rules, and the rhetoric of "miracles violate the laws of nature" makes intuitive sense.
The biblical picture is different at the root. Creation is not a machine running on its own; it is continuously upheld by its Maker. The Son "upholds the universe by the word of his power" (Heb 1:3); "in him all things hold together" (Col 1:17); God makes springs gush and grass grow and gives all creatures their food in due season (Ps 104); he has granted the "fixed order" of day and night as a covenant (Jer 33:25; Gen 8:22). On this picture, what we call "laws of nature" are our descriptions of the ordinary, faithful, regular way God governs his creation. They are real regularities — real enough to build bridges and aircraft on — but they are descriptions of providence, not powers above God.
Three consequences follow, and they reframe the whole debate:
The regularity of nature is itself theological. Science is possible because God is faithful. The believer is not surprised that the universe runs by law; she knows the Lawgiver's character.
A miracle is not a violation but a variation. If the laws describe God's ordinary governance, then a miracle is simply his extraordinary governance — the Author writing a different sentence, not a vandal breaking into the book. Nothing is "broken" when the One who upholds all things acts unusually within his own creation.
Laws describe what happens when nothing intervenes — they never forbid intervention. Even at the human level, no law of physics is violated when I catch a falling apple; gravity continues to operate while another agent acts. The laws state what nature does left to itself; they are silent about what nature's God may do.

This is why the common slogan dies on inspection. "Miracles violate the laws of nature" assumes the deistic picture; the Christian never held it. Grant that God continuously upholds the cosmos, and the question "can he act extraordinarily within it?" answers itself. The only question left — the right question — is whether he has: a matter of evidence, to which we turn in Sections 11–13.
8. The intelligible universe: why science fits a created world
Turn the telescope around. The success of science is usually wielded against faith; in fact it is one of the stranger facts a naturalist must live with, and one of the most natural facts a Christian can point to. For science to work at all, several remarkable things must be true at once.
The universe is ordered — it runs by stable regularities rather than chaos.
The order is intelligible — graspable by minds, expressible in concepts.
The order is mathematical — describable, to astonishing precision, in equations; Eugene Wigner (no Christian) famously called this "the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics," and Einstein remarked that the eternally incomprehensible thing about the world is its comprehensibility.
Our minds happen to fit it — cognitive faculties tuned, far beyond any survival need, to track quarks and quasars.
On naturalism each of these is a brute fact — an unexplained stroke of luck at the foundation of everything. Why should a purposeless universe be law-governed? Why should its deep structure be readable by late-arriving primates whose faculties were filtered only for fitness? Nothing in the worldview predicts it; the naturalist can only say that it is so, never why. On Christian theism the same facts fall into place without strain: a rational God created an ordered world by his λόγος and made human beings in his image — minor rational beings in a cosmos built by a major one. Science works because the same Reason stands behind the world and the mind. Kepler's "thinking God's thoughts after him" is not a pious flourish; it is a precise description of the fit.
Stated carefully, this is not a God-of-the-gaps argument. It does not point to something science has failed to explain; it points to what must already be true for science to explain anything. The argument is at home with every equation succeeding — indeed the more science succeeds, the sharper the question becomes. 9. What naturalism struggles to explain
Metaphysical naturalism presents itself as the sober, evidence-driven default. In fact it carries a list of unpaid explanatory debts — features of reality that everyone, including the naturalist, lives by, and that a world of nothing-but-particles is hard pressed to fund. The pattern matters more than any single item: in each case the naturalist does not explain the datum so much as inherit it and look away.
The existence of anything at all. Why is there a contingent universe rather than nothing? "The universe just is" ends inquiry exactly where theism begins it (Course 05).
The laws and constants themselves. Naturalism uses the laws to explain events; it has no account of the laws.
Mathematics and logic. Necessary, immaterial, universal truths sit awkwardly in an ontology of spacetime and matter.
Consciousness. Third-person processes yielding first-person experience — the hard problem (Course 10) — remains, on naturalism's own admission, unexplained.
The reliability of reason. If our beliefs are products of a process aimed at survival rather than truth, why trust the beliefs — including belief in naturalism? (Plantinga's evolutionary argument against naturalism presses exactly this; Darwin himself confessed the "horrid doubt.")
Objective moral obligation. Real duties binding on all persons require more than herd preference (Course 07).
Intelligibility and the mind's fit to the world — the previous section's point.
The apologetic posture here should be confident but clean. The claim is not "science cannot yet explain X, therefore God" — gaps close, and faith built on gaps closes with them. The claim is structural: these are not gaps in the scientific story but preconditions of any scientific story — the frame of the picture, not missing patches of paint. Theism explains the frame; naturalism borrows it. As Romans 1:20 has it, the made order itself discloses "his eternal power and divine nature" — the disclosure is in the existence, order, and knowability of the whole, not merely in this or that unexplained corner.
10. Miracles defined carefully
Sloppy definitions lose this argument before it starts. If a miracle is "a violation of the laws of nature" (Hume's definition), half the work of disbelief is done by the word "violation." Define biblically instead.
A miracle is an extraordinary act of God, beyond the ordinary course of his providence, done for revelatory and redemptive purposes — to attest his messengers, to disclose his character, and to advance his saving plan. Scripture's own vocabulary is instructive: miracles are signs (σημεῖον, sēmeion) that point beyond themselves, wonders (τέρας, teras) that arrest attention, and mighty works (δύναμις, dynamis) of divine power — the three terms together in Acts 2:22 and Hebrews 2:4. The accent falls not on rule-breaking but on meaning: a miracle says something.
Several boundary-stones keep the concept biblical:
Miracles are rare by design. Scripture's miracles cluster around revelatory epochs — the Exodus, the prophetic crisis under Elijah and Elisha, and supremely the ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ and his apostles' founding witness. Whole faithful generations saw none. Rarity is not an embarrassment; it is the point — signs that were routine would signify nothing.
Miracles are not magic. Magic manipulates hidden forces by technique; miracle is the free, personal act of the sovereign God, unavailable to formula (see Acts 8:9–24).
Miracles are not mere anomalies. A random unexplained blip carries no message. Biblical miracles occur in interpretive contexts — announced, prayed for, or explained — so that their meaning is public (1 Kgs 18:20–39 is the classic case: Elijah prays precisely so that "this people may know that you, O LORD, are God").
Miracles presuppose, and do not replace, providence. The God who parts one sea also sustains every tide. The extraordinary act stands out against the canvas of ordinary faithfulness — which is why a robust doctrine of providence, far from making miracles awkward, is what makes them legible.
Miracles invite verification. Jesus points doubters to the works themselves (John 10:37–38; Luke 7:18–23); the risen Christ shows hands and side (John 20:24–29); Paul tells a king the thing "was not done in a corner" (Acts 26:26). Biblical miracle-claims live in the open air of testimony.
A definitional footnote worth making in conversation: the Christian claim has never been that miracles are common, that every report of one is true, or that credulity is a virtue. Scripture itself warns of false signs (Deut 13:1–5; 2 Thess 2:9) and commands testing. The Christian and the scientist share an interest in sifting claims; they differ only on whether the sieve may be built so fine that no act of God could ever, in principle, pass through it.
11. Hume's argument against miracles — examined
Every modern objection to miracles is, at bottom, a footnote to David Hume's essay "Of Miracles" (1748). His argument deserves a fair statement, because it is elegant and still persuades. Hume argues: a miracle is a violation of the laws of nature; the laws rest on "firm and unalterable experience" — uniform experience amounts to a proof against any miracle; testimony, by contrast, is often mistaken or dishonest; therefore no testimony can ever establish a miracle, "unless the testimony be of such a kind, that its falsehood would be more miraculous than the fact which it endeavours to establish." The wise man, proportioning belief to evidence, will always find the scales tipped against the miracle report. The modern slogan "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" is this argument compressed to a bumper sticker.
Acknowledge what is right in it: testimony should be weighed, frequency does bear on expectation, and most miracle reports in history are rightly doubted. But as an argument that no evidence could ever establish a miracle, it fails at several joints.
First, it begs the question. Hume's premise — that uniform experience stands against miracles — assumes the very point in dispute. Whether experience is uniform is exactly the question; the disciples, the women at the tomb, and five hundred witnesses claimed otherwise (1 Cor 15:3–8). One cannot rule their testimony out of court on the ground that no such testimony exists. The "proof" against miracles is manufactured by first excluding all the evidence for them.
Second, it proves too much. A rule that says "never accept testimony to an unprecedented event" would have obliged Hume's contemporaries to disbelieve reports of ice from travellers to the tropics (his own example, which he handles awkwardly), and would oblige us to reject meteorites, ball lightning, and every scientific first observation. Unique, surprising events can be established by testimony; courts, historians, and scientists do it constantly. Probability theory after Hume (Charles Babbage's reply, and modern Bayesian treatments) showed formally that sufficiently many independent, reliable witnesses can overcome any finite prior improbability.
Third, it smuggles in naturalism's priors. The "improbability" of a miracle is calculated as if God's existence were already off the table. But if there is a God who created and upholds the world, the prior probability of his acting — especially at the climax of a long, publicly documented redemptive history, in the person of one who predicted it — is not vanishingly small at all. The evidence for a miracle never stands alone; it stands within a worldview-level case. Hume's scales are rigged only for the reader who already weighed God out.
Fourth, "extraordinary evidence" is a sliding standard. Taken strictly, the slogan is unfalsifiable hand-waving: any evidence offered can be declared insufficiently extraordinary. Taken reasonably, it just means "strong claims need strong evidence" — which the Christian happily grants, and then presents: multiple independent sources, early creedal testimony, hostile-witness conversions, the empty tomb, the church itself. The right response to a strong claim is examination, not a standard engineered never to be met.

12. Does science rule out miracles?
Strip away Hume and a residual feeling remains: surely modern science, just by existing, has made miracles incredible? The feeling dissolves under three observations.
First, the laws of nature describe; they do not legislate. As Section 7 argued, a law of nature is a description of how the world runs in its ordinary course — what happens when nothing outside the described system acts. Descriptions cannot forbid. The law of gravity is not violated when a hand catches the apple, and the regularities of physiology are not "broken" if the One who upholds physiology raises the dead. C. S. Lewis put it exactly: miracles do not break the laws; they feed new events into the pattern, and the laws take over from there. A virginal conception, once granted, gestates nine months.
Second, knowing the regularity is the precondition of recognizing the miracle — so better science makes miracles more identifiable, not less. The popular story says ancient people believed in miracles because they did not know the laws of nature. The truth is the reverse: only someone who knows that dead men stay dead can recognize a resurrection as a sign. Joseph knew exactly where babies come from — that is why he resolved to divorce Mary quietly (Matt 1:18–19). The disciples doubted; Thomas demanded physical evidence (John 20:24–25); the report was dismissed as "an idle tale" (Luke 24:11). The first witnesses were not credulous primitives but reluctant converts who shared our presumption of natural regularity — and were overcome by evidence. Modern science has refined our knowledge of the regularities; it has not changed the logical situation by one inch.
Third, no experiment bears on a unique historical act. Science gains its power from repetition: run the trial again, vary the conditions, accumulate statistics. A miracle claim is a claim about a particular, unrepeatable past event — investigable by the historian's tools (sources, testimony, inference to the best explanation), not the experimentalist's. "Science has shown miracles do not happen" is therefore a category error twice over: no experiment addresses the past, and the relevant generalization ("the dead stay dead, absent divine action") is one the Christian already affirms. The dispute was never about biology. It is about whether anything beyond nature exists and has acted — and on that question the laboratory is, by its own honest constitution, silent.

13. The resurrection: the test-case miracle
Christianity does not ask anyone to believe in miracles in general; it stakes everything on one in particular. "If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain... But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Cor 15:14, 20). This is the right battleground for the whole science-and-miracles debate, for two reasons: it is the miracle on which the faith actually stands or falls, and it is the one with a serious public-evidence trail. The full case is laid out on the dedicated resurrection page; here is its skeleton, framed for the scientific objector.
The crucifixion is bedrock. Jesus' death by Roman crucifixion is attested by Tacitus, Josephus, and the unanimous early sources, and is granted as historically certain by sceptical scholars (Bart Ehrman included). No swoon, no substitution.
The proclamation is too early to be legend. The creed Paul "received" and delivered in 1 Corinthians 15:3–8 — death, burial, resurrection, named witnesses — is dated by critical scholarship to within a few years of the events, anchored to Paul's Jerusalem visit (Gal 1:18–19). Legends need generations; this was public while the named witnesses lived.
The tomb was found empty by women — testimony no first-century inventor would fabricate, since female witness was discounted; the criterion of embarrassment cuts hard here.
The appearances were multiple, varied, and transformative — individuals and groups, friends and enemies, culminating in the conversion of the persecutor Paul and the sceptic James, both of whom died for the claim.
The church itself needs explaining. A crucified Messiah was a contradiction in terms; resurrection in the middle of history fit no one's expectations, Jewish or pagan. Something launched a movement of Sabbath-keeping monotheists into worshipping a crucified man within months, in the city where he died.
Now the methodological point this course adds. The standard alternatives — conspiracy, hallucination, wrong tomb, legend — each fail on ordinary historical grounds (they are weighed on the resurrection page). What keeps the sceptic from the conclusion is almost never the evidence; it is the prior conviction that miracles cannot happen — Hume's scales again. But that prior is the very thing Sections 11–12 examined and found to be philosophy, not science. If God exists, a resurrection at the climax of Israel's story, performed on the one who staked his claims on it (Matt 12:38–40; John 2:19), is not a random improbability but a supremely fitting act. Paul's question to Agrippa remains the right one: "Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?" (Acts 26:8) — and his observation remains the right method: "this has not been done in a corner" (Acts 26:26).
Keep the order straight in conversation: do not try to prove "miracles in general" first. Argue that miracles cannot be ruled out in advance (philosophy), then go straight to the best-attested case (history). Generic openness costs the sceptic little; the resurrection, once examined, costs everything.
14. Origins: creation, evolution, and intramural debate
No science-and-faith conversation goes long before the word "evolution" arrives, so the apologist needs both a settled core and an honest map of the intramural terrain. Begin with what Scripture makes non-negotiable, confessed by all orthodox Christians:
God created all things from nothing, freely and purposefully (Gen 1:1; Heb 11:3).
Creation is distinct from its Creator, ordered, and good.
Human beings are created in God's image, not accidental by-products (Gen 1:26–27).
The fall is real, and death's dominion over humanity traces to sin (Rom 5:12).
The same God who created will redeem and renew creation (Col 1:15–20; Rev 21).
Within that fixed core, Bible-honouring Christians have differed — and continue to differ — on the timescale and means of creation: young-earth creationism (a recent creation in six ordinary days), old-earth creationism (an ancient cosmos with progressive creative acts), and forms of evolutionary creationism (God working through an evolutionary process, with humanity nonetheless specially constituted in his image). These positions disagree about the genre and intent of Genesis 1 and about how to weigh scientific consilience; they do not disagree about the Creator, the image, the fall, or the gospel. This page does not adjudicate that debate; it insists only that it be conducted with exegetical care and charity, and that it not be mistaken for the apologetic frontier.
Because the apologetic frontier is elsewhere. The argument that matters with the unbeliever is not the age of the earth but a logical sleight at the heart of popular atheism: "evolution explains life, therefore God is unnecessary." Note what this assumes — that God and natural processes are rivals, such that explaining a mechanism eliminates its Maker. The whole doctrine of providence denies the rivalry. God ordinarily works through means: he gives the harvest through seedtime, rain, and the farmer's labour (Gen 8:22; Ps 104:14); he knits each child together through nine months of embryology (Ps 139:13) — and no one thinks obstetrics has explained babies "without God." A described mechanism is not a dismissed Maker; a complete account of how the watch runs says nothing about whether it was designed to. Even granted the most generous estimate of evolutionary theory's scope, the deeper questions stand untouched: why there is a universe, why it is law-governed and fine-tuned for life, why matter ever became conscious, why the process is intelligible at all (Sections 8–9). Darwin, whatever else he did, did not touch those.

A pastoral plea: do not make a particular timescale the gate of the gospel. Students have shipwrecked faith because they were taught that Christianity stands or falls with one reading of Genesis 1's days, then met evidence that shook the reading. The faith stands on the Creator, the cross, and the empty tomb. Keep the intramural debate intramural — vigorous, exegetical, and charitable — and keep the door of the gospel as wide as the apostles kept it.
15. Galileo and the warfare myth
"The church has always fought science — remember Galileo." The sentence does more work for popular unbelief than any argument, so its history deserves to be told straight. The "warfare thesis" — the idea that science and Christianity are locked in perennial conflict — was largely manufactured in the nineteenth century by two polemical books: John William Draper's History of the Conflict between Religion and Science (1874) and Andrew Dickson White's A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (1896). Professional historians of science have spent a century dismantling them; the "conflict thesis" is now a textbook example of bad historiography that survives in popular culture alone. The standard myths fall one by one: the medieval church did not teach a flat earth (educated medievals knew Eratosthenes' sphere; the flat-earth legend was popularized by a Washington Irving novel); the church did not ban human dissection; Bruno was executed (indefensibly) for theological heresies, not for astronomy; and the university and observatory grew up under churchly patronage, not against it.
What of Galileo himself? The real affair was a tangle, not a parable. Galileo was a sincere Catholic; his heliocentrism built on the work of Copernicus — a churchman whose book was dedicated to the pope; his loudest opponents were Aristotelian university philosophers defending Ptolemy's science; the observational evidence for heliocentrism was, in 1633, genuinely incomplete (stellar parallax was not measured until 1838); and Galileo's gift for ridiculing his patron pope in print did him no favours. The church authorities erred grievously — they bound biblical interpretation to Aristotelian cosmology and disciplined a man for being substantially right, a wrong later formally acknowledged. But one mishandled episode in four centuries, in which churchmen defended the reigning scientific consensus too rigidly, is not a war between faith and science. It is a cautionary tale about marrying exegesis to any era's science — a caution Galileo himself stated perfectly, citing Augustine and Cardinal Baronius: the Scripture teaches "how one goes to heaven, not how the heavens go."
Meanwhile the actual record — Christian foundations of the universities, clergy-naturalists from Mendel (genetics, an Augustinian friar) to Lemaitre (the Big Bang, a Catholic priest), the unbroken line of believing scientists from Kepler and Boyle to Faraday, Maxwell, and beyond (Section 3) — tells the truer story: sibling disciplines with occasional quarrels, raised in the same household. The Christian need not pretend the church has never erred about nature; she need only decline the myth that error is the family history.
16. Twelve apologetic case studies
Each case study follows the established pattern: the objection as you hear it, the hidden assumption beneath it, what is genuinely understandable in the concern, the internal question that tests it, a careful Christian response, a clarifying question to ask, and the pivot to Christ. The recurring discipline is to honour real science, expose smuggled philosophy, and keep the resurrection — not a generic theism — as the destination.
Case study 1 — "Science has disproven God"
Hidden assumption: a method that brackets God can deliver verdicts about God. What is understandable: science's track record is genuinely dazzling, and many God-claims it was once thought to support have dissolved. Internal question: which experiment, in which journal, established the conclusion? Christian response: science studies natural regularities; the existence of nature's Author is a philosophical and historical question the method cannot reach — a metal detector's silence about plastic. Clarifying question: "Can you name the scientific finding that entails 'no God' — rather than a philosophical interpretation of it?" Pivot to Christ: the question was never settled in a lab; it was raised by an empty tomb.
Case study 2 — "Miracles violate the laws of nature"
Hidden assumption: the laws are a closed mechanism standing above any God. What is understandable: nature's regularity is real, and a world of constant caprice would be unlivable and unstudiable. Internal question: are the laws prescriptions that forbid, or descriptions of nature's ordinary course? Christian response: laws describe what happens when nothing intervenes; they are the ordinary faithfulness of the God who upholds all things, and his extraordinary act breaks nothing — as catching an apple breaks no law of gravity. Clarifying question: "When a hand catches a falling apple, which law of physics was violated?" Pivot to Christ: the One who upholds the regularities (Heb 1:3) is free to write a resurrection into them.
Case study 3 — "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"
Hidden assumption: the prior probability of divine action is fixed near zero — i.e., atheism is assumed in the priors. What is understandable: strong claims do warrant strong scrutiny; credulity is not a virtue. Internal question: what would count as "extraordinary enough," and is the standard falsifiable or a moving goalpost? Christian response: grant the reasonable version — then present the actual evidence: early creed, empty tomb, multiple appearances, transformed sceptics; and note that the claim's "extraordinariness" is being measured against priors that presuppose no God. Clarifying question: "What evidence, specifically, would you accept — and would any testimony qualify?" Pivot to Christ: Paul's challenge stands: the thing was "not done in a corner" (Acts 26:26) — examine it.
Case study 4 — "Religion and science have always been at war"
Hidden assumption: Draper-White historiography is accurate history. What is understandable: there have been real collisions — Galileo's discipline was real, and some believers do fear evidence. Internal question: what do professional historians of science — religious and secular — actually conclude about the conflict thesis? Christian response: the warfare narrative is nineteenth-century polemic, abandoned by the historians; the deeper story is Christian doctrine supplying the cradle of science — Kepler, Boyle, Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Mendel, Lemaitre. Clarifying question: "Why do you think modern experimental science arose where and when it did?" Pivot to Christ: the same Logos behind the equations entered the world they describe (John 1:1–14).
Case study 5 — "Only what science can verify is real"
Hidden assumption: scientism — one method exhausts knowledge. What is understandable: a rightful allergy to claims that hide from every test. Internal question: can the claim verify itself? Christian response: the statement is not a deliverance of any science; if true, it is unknowable, and it would delete mathematics, logic, morality, history, and the trust in reason on which science floats. Clarifying question: "Was 'only science yields knowledge' established by an experiment?" Pivot to Christ: knowledge is larger than the lab — large enough to include a risen man examined by witnesses (Luke 1:1–4; John 20:27).
Case study 6 — "Evolution makes God unnecessary"
Hidden assumption: God and natural mechanisms are rivals, so an explained process is an eliminated Creator. What is understandable: evolutionary biology has real explanatory successes, and some apologetics did rest God's case on biological gaps. Internal question: does describing how a process works answer why there is a law-governed, fine-tuned, intelligible process at all? Christian response: providence works through means — God gives harvests through agriculture and children through embryology (Ps 104:14; Ps 139:13); a mechanism no more eliminates its Maker than a description of a watch's gears eliminates the watchmaker. The deeper questions — existence, order, consciousness, intelligibility — precede biology. Clarifying question: "Does explaining how something runs tell you whether it was intended to run?" Case study 7 — "Believing in miracles is believing without evidence"
Hidden assumption: faith means credulity, and miracle reports were accepted by people who knew no better. What is understandable: most miracle claims in history are indeed poorly evidenced, and Christians should sift them too. Internal question: what did the first witnesses themselves require before believing? Christian response: the resurrection accounts are full of doubt overcome by evidence — Thomas demanding to touch, the women's report dismissed as an idle tale, Jesus eating fish to prove embodiment (John 20:24–29; Luke 24:11, 36–43); biblical faith is trust grounded in testimony, "not done in a corner." Clarifying question: "Have you read the resurrection narratives and noticed how much doubting they contain?" Pivot to Christ: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed" — said by one who first showed his hands and side (John 20:27–29).

Case study 9 — "God of the gaps — religion just plugs holes science hasn't filled yet"
Hidden assumption: all theistic argument points at gaps inside the scientific story. What is understandable: some apologetics really did camp in gaps, and retreated as they closed; the criticism stings because it has targets. Internal question: does the argument from intelligibility point to a missing patch of paint, or to the frame of the picture? Christian response: the serious arguments concern preconditions, not gaps — why there is anything, why it is law-governed, why mathematics maps it, why minds can read it; these sharpen as science succeeds, rather than shrinking. Clarifying question: "Is 'why does science work at all?' a question science can answer?" Pivot to Christ: Christians worship not a god of the gaps but the Logos of the whole (John 1:3; Col 1:17).
Case study 10 — "The resurrection is unscientific"
Hidden assumption: a unique past event must be validated by experimental method or stand refuted. What is understandable: dead men staying dead is as well-established a regularity as exists — and the Christian agrees. Internal question: is the claim that Jesus rose by natural processes (which science addresses), or by an act of God (which it does not)? Christian response: the resurrection is a historical claim about a particular event, weighed by historical evidence — sources, testimony, transformed witnesses, the empty tomb; science tells us only what everyone already granted: this does not happen naturally. That is precisely why it was preached as a sign. Clarifying question: "What kind of evidence is appropriate for a unique past event — laboratory or historical?" Pivot to Christ: "Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?" (Acts 26:8).
Case study 11 — "Why doesn't God do miracles today, on camera?"
Hidden assumption: if miracles were real they would be regular, repeatable, and producible on demand. What is understandable: the demand for evidence is honest, and televangelist abuses have poisoned the well. Internal question: would signs on demand still be signs — and what did Jesus say to the demand for them? Christian response: miracles cluster at revelatory hinges of redemptive history precisely because they are signs, not utilities; Jesus refused sign-on-demand and pointed to the one decisive sign, his death and resurrection (Matt 12:38–40); Scripture itself warns against both credulity and sign-seeking. Clarifying question: "If a sign could be summoned at will, would it still point beyond itself?" Pivot to Christ: the sign already given — the sign of Jonah — stands in the historical record, waiting to be examined.
Case study 12 — "As science advances, religion retreats — soon there will be nothing left"
Hidden assumption: theology and science compete for one explanatory territory, so each scientific gain is a religious loss. What is understandable: particular religious claims about nature have been corrected, and intellectual honesty must admit it. Internal question: has the actual ground of Christian belief — creation, providence, resurrection — shrunk by one inch since Newton? Christian response: the doctrine of creation never occupied the territory science maps; it grounds it. The God who works through means is not displaced when the means are described; and the central Christian evidence — the historical resurrection — is untouched by any equation. The retreat story confuses corrected cosmology with refuted theology. Clarifying question: "Which core Christian doctrine, exactly, has a scientific discovery refuted?" Pivot to Christ: two thousand years of advancing science have not moved the stone back over the tomb.
17. A practical conversation method
Science-flavoured objections feel intimidating because they arrive wearing authority. A simple sequence keeps the conversation honest, friendly, and Christ-ward — and keeps you from being stampeded by prestige.
Listen. Is this a real scientific question, a philosophical objection in a lab coat, a wound from anti-intellectual religion, or borrowed confidence from a YouTube atheist?
Honour. Say something true and warm about science early. The Christian has no quarrel with the telescope; hostility to science loses the hearer and slanders the doctrine of creation.
Sort. Separate the claim's scientific content (regularities, mechanisms, data) from its philosophical content (what exists, what counts as knowledge, what is possible). Most objections are philosophy riding science's prestige.
Define. Pin down the key term: law of nature, miracle, faith, proof, naturalism, science itself. Half the argument dissolves at the definition stage.
Expose. Make the hidden premise visible — usually "nature is all there is" or "only science yields knowledge" — and ask where it came from.
Test. Apply the claim to itself (can scientism verify scientism?) and to ordinary life (does the objector trust history, logic, morality, testimony?).
Present. Offer the Christian account positively: a rational God, an ordered and intelligible creation, science as the study of his ordinary faithfulness, miracles as his meaningful extraordinary acts.
Pivot. Move from miracles-in-general to the resurrection-in-particular — the claim with a public evidence trail — and to the risen Lord himself.
A worked example — "I believe in science, not miracles"
Listen: "Tell me what convinced you — was there a book, a course, an experience with church?"
Honour: "I love science too — believing the universe is the work of a rational God rather encourages that."
Sort: "Can we separate two things? What science has measured, and the claim that nature is all there is. The second isn't a measurement."
Define: "What do you mean by a law of nature — a description of what ordinarily happens, or a rule that forbids God to act?"
Expose: "It sounds like the real premise is 'there is no God to act.' That's a philosophy — worth discussing, but not a lab result."
Test: "You trust plenty of non-scientific knowledge — history, logic, your own consciousness, this conversation. So the question is evidence, not method."
Present: "Christianity expects nature to run by regularities — God's faithfulness — and claims he acted extraordinarily at one decisive point."

20. Greek and Hebrew notes
A few biblical words anchor this course's themes. As always, the aim is to see the range Scripture actually uses — and to avoid building arguments on a single gloss.
בָּרָא — bara — "to create." In the Old Testament this verb takes only God as its subject (Gen 1:1, 21, 27; Isa 40:26): creation in the strong sense is exclusively divine work. It does not by itself specify the means or timescale — those questions are answered (or left open) by context — but it fixes the Agent.
אוֹת — ot — "sign." Used of the rainbow (Gen 9:12–13), the Exodus signs (Exod 4:8–9; 7:3), and prophetic confirmations (Isa 7:11, 14). A sign is an event freighted with meaning — God making something known — which is why biblical miracles come with interpretation attached.
נִפְלָאוֹת — niflaot — "wonders, marvellous works." The Psalms' word for God's astonishing deeds, in both redemption and creation: "Remember the wondrous works that he has done" (Ps 105:5); "I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds" (Ps 77:11–14). The category embraces the Red Sea and the ordinary heavens — a warning against shrinking "wonder" to rule-breaking.
חֹק — choq — "statute, decree, fixed order." Strikingly, Scripture's nearest term for "law of nature" is a covenant word: God has given the sea its "decree" (Prov 8:29; Jer 5:22) and established the "fixed order" (חֻקּוֹת, chuqqot) of heaven and earth (Jer 33:25; cf. Ps 148:6). Nature's regularities are ordinances of a faithful Lawgiver — the biblical picture of Section 7 in a single word.
σημεῖον — sēmeion — "sign." John's chosen word for Jesus' miracles (John 2:11; 20:30–31): acts that point beyond themselves to his identity and glory. A sign demands reading, not just gaping — "these are written so that you may believe."
τέρας — teras — "wonder." The arresting, astonishing aspect of the act; in the New Testament it never appears alone but always with "signs" (Acts 2:22, 43) — astonishment is never the point by itself.
δύναμις — dynamis — "power, mighty work." The Synoptics' common word for miracles (Matt 11:20–23; Mark 6:2, 5): acts of divine power. The same word describes the gospel itself — "the power of God for salvation" (Rom 1:16) — and the resurrection (Phil 3:10).
κτίσις — ktisis — "creation, created thing." What God has made, as distinct from the Maker (Rom 1:20, 25; Col 1:15, 23). Romans 1 turns on this word: the creature studied is meant to disclose the Creator worshipped — and fallen hearts exchange the one for the other.
λόγος — logos — "word, reason." "In the beginning was the Logos... all things were made through him" (John 1:1–3). The term carries both speech and rationality: the universe is the product of Reason, which is why it answers to reason — and that Reason became flesh.
φύσις — physis — "nature." The ordinary course or character of things (Rom 1:26; 2:14; Jas 3:7). The Bible knows the concept of the natural order; it simply refuses to seal it shut against the God who made it.
ἀνάστασις — anastasis — "resurrection." A "standing up again" of the body (1 Cor 15; Acts 17:32). At Athens the word divided the philosophers — some mocked, some said "we will hear you again" — exactly the two responses this course's argument still meets.

Original-language study sharpens reading; it does not settle scientific questions. Bara fixes the Agent of creation, not its calendar; choq shows nature's order is covenantal, not that Jeremiah anticipated field equations. Let the words carry exactly their freight, and no more.
21. The pivot to Christ
This course has been clearing ground: science honoured in its sphere, naturalism unmasked as philosophy, scientism shown to fail its own test, the laws of nature returned to their Lawgiver, Hume's scales unrigged, the warfare myth retired. But cleared ground is not a destination. The argument was never meant to end at "miracles are possible." Possibility is cheap. Christianity stakes its life on an actuality.
For the deepest truth in this whole subject is that the Reason behind the universe is not a principle but a Person. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through him" (John 1:1–3). The intelligibility that makes science possible, the regularities the laboratory charts, the constants the cosmologist measures — all of it is the ongoing speech of the Son, who "upholds the universe by the word of his power" (Heb 1:3), in whom "all things hold together" (Col 1:17). Every equation that works is a small audit of his faithfulness. The scientist, believing or not, spends her career thinking his thoughts after him.
And the Word became flesh (John 1:14). The Author stepped onto the page. When he did, the signs flowed not as stunts but as disclosures: water blushing into wine at a wedding (John 2:1–11), legs straightening on a Sabbath, eyes opened that were born closed, a widow's son sitting up on his bier, Lazarus walking out of a four-day tomb (John 11) — each one a window into what the kingdom of God means for a creation subjected to futility. He pointed honest doubters to the works themselves: "even though you do not believe me, believe the works" (John 10:38). And when his enemies demanded a sign on command, he promised exactly one: "the sign of the prophet Jonah... the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matt 12:39–40).
That sign was given. "This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it" (Acts 2:23–24). Here the whole course converges. The regularity of nature — dead men stay dead — is why the resurrection means something; the freedom of nature's Lord is why it could happen; the public testimony — creed, tomb, witnesses, transformed enemies, the church itself — is why it must be reckoned with. It was "not done in a corner" (Acts 26:26). And it is "the firstfruits" (1 Cor 15:20): the first installment of a renewed creation in which the groaning cosmos science studies will be set free (Rom 8:19–21). The resurrection is not an exception to the story of nature; it is the preview of nature's ending — the chapter where everything is mended.
So the Christian does not choose between the telescope and the empty tomb. The same Lord stands behind both: the Logos who ordered the heavens that declare his glory, and the risen one who holds the keys of death. Science, followed honestly, walks the cosmos like a cathedral and reads the inscription over its door: "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Ps 19:1). The gospel names the Architect — and announces that he has visited, died, and risen.
From the laws of nature to the Lord of nature
Do not stop at possibility. Come to Jesus Christ — the Logos through whom all things were made, the Word made flesh who healed and stilled and raised, the crucified one whom God raised from the dead as the firstfruits of a renewed creation, and the coming King in whom the universe that science so wonderfully describes will at last be made new.

These are the questions that come up most often about science, naturalism, and miracles — from skeptics, from students, and from believers under pressure. Each is answered in five parts: how you will usually hear it, a short answer, a fuller explanation, the scriptural or doctrinal anchor, and a pastoral note.

"Hasn't science disproven God?"
How you'll hear it
"We used to need God to explain things. Science explains them now."
No experiment outputs "no God." Science studies nature's regularities; whether nature has an Author is a philosophical and historical question the method cannot reach.
The longer answer
Science's successes are explanations of how the created order runs — and the doctrine of providence predicts exactly such an order. The claim "nature is all there is" is metaphysics, not measurement: a worldview riding on science's prestige. The serious questions — why anything exists, why it is law-governed and intelligible, what happened at the empty tomb — stand entirely outside the laboratory's jurisdiction. Science has not disproven God; naturalism has assumed his absence and called the assumption a finding.

A miracle is his extraordinary act against that faithful backdrop — as a caught apple breaks no law of gravity, since the laws describe what happens absent further agency. The real question is never "may the laws be broken?" but "has God acted?" — and that is a matter of evidence.

This is Hume's argument as a slogan, and it inherits Hume's problems: it discounts the testimony before hearing it, and taken strictly it is unfalsifiable — any evidence offered can be declared insufficiently extraordinary. The reasonable version simply means rigorous examination, which the Christian welcomes: an early creed (1 Cor 15:3–8), an empty tomb attested by women, multiple varied appearances, converted enemies, and a church inexplicable without them. Draper and White manufactured the conflict narrative in the 1870s–90s; historians have spent a century dismantling it (no medieval flat earth, no ban on dissection, universities and observatories under churchly patronage). Science arose once — in Christian Europe — nourished by convictions that the world is rational (made by the Logos), orderly (upheld by a faithful God), contingent (so it must be observed), and not divine (so it may be examined). Kepler, Boyle, Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Mendel, Lemaitre worked from faith, not despite it. Galileo's case was real and the church erred — one mishandled episode, honestly told, is not a war.

The women's report was dismissed as "an idle tale" (Luke 24:11) — by the apostles. John states his evidential purpose outright: "these are written so that you may believe" (John 20:31). Faith in Scripture is personal trust in a God who has given public grounds — closer to the trust you place in a well-attested witness than to a leap in the dark. "They thought lightning was Zeus. Of course they believed in resurrections."
Backwards: recognizing a miracle requires knowing the regularity. Joseph knew exactly where babies come from — that's why he planned a quiet divorce. The first witnesses doubted first.
The longer answer
Ancient cosmology was wrong about much, but on the regularities that matter here — virgins do not conceive, the dead stay dead — the ancients were under no illusions; their funerals and their skepticism prove it. Matthew 1:18–19 shows Joseph reasoning from natural knowledge; Luke 24:11 shows apostles dismissing the resurrection report; John 20:24–25 shows Thomas demanding physical evidence. They believed because they were overcome by evidence, not because they lacked our chemistry. Modern science refined the regularities; it changed nothing in the logic.

"Can a scientist believe in miracles without betraying science?"

"You can't run experiments Monday to Friday and believe in resurrections on Sunday."
Yes — with complete consistency. Science describes nature's ordinary course; a miracle is the Creator's extraordinary act. Affirming both is exactly what Kepler, Boyle, Faraday, and Maxwell did.
The longer answer
The believing scientist holds methodological naturalism in the lab (seek natural causes of natural events — providence predicts their regularity) without metaphysical naturalism in the worldview (nature is all there is — a philosophy the lab cannot test). She expects no miracles in her test tubes, because signs attach to redemptive revelation, not to chemistry. There is no contradiction between charting God's ordinary faithfulness all week and believing that at one dated point in history he acted extraordinarily — any more than studying an author's style forbids believing he once wrote something unprecedented.

"Is the resurrection a scientific claim?"

"If it's not testable, it's not knowledge; if it is testable, it failed."
It is a historical claim — about a unique past event — investigated by testimony and inference, exactly as we investigate Caesar's Rubicon. Science contributes one premise the Christian already grants: this does not happen naturally.
The longer answer
The demand to verify the resurrection experimentally is a category error: no unique past event — battles, assassinations, first performances — is established by rerunning it. Historians weigh sources, dates, independence, and explanatory power. On those terms the resurrection case is strong: the early creed, the empty tomb, the appearances, the transformed skeptics, the church. The scientific regularity ("the dead stay dead") is not a counter-argument; it is what makes the event a sign rather than a curiosity, and it is precisely what the first preachers asserted: "God raised him up" (Acts 2:24) — an act, not an anomaly.

"Do Christians have to choose a side on evolution?"
How you'll hear it
"Either Darwin or Genesis — pick one."
All orthodox Christians confess the fixed core: God created freely from nothing, humanity bears his image, the fall is real, the Creator will redeem. Within that core, believers differ on timescale and means — an intramural debate, not the gate of the gospel.
The longer answer
Young-earth, old-earth, and evolutionary-creation positions disagree about the genre of Genesis 1 and the weight of scientific consilience; they agree about the Creator, the image, sin, and salvation. The debate should be conducted with open Bibles and charity — and it should never be exported to the unbeliever as Christianity's front door. The apostles' gospel led with the resurrection (1 Cor 15:3–4), not with a calendar of creation. Anchor faith where they anchored it, and debate the rest as family.

"Why does the universe obey mathematics?"
How you'll hear it
"Equations written on a blackboard predict particles we've never seen. Doesn't that strike you as odd?"
It struck Wigner and Einstein as very odd — on naturalism it is unexplained luck. On Christian theism it is expected: a rational God created an ordered world and minds in his image to read it.
The longer answer
Wigner called it "the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics"; Einstein said the only incomprehensible thing about the universe is its comprehensibility. Naturalism can note the fit between abstract mathematics and physical reality but cannot fund it: why should a purposeless cosmos be elegantly law-governed, and why should fitness-filtered primate brains track its deep structure? Theism explains both sides of the fit with one stroke — the same Logos stands behind the world and the mind. This is the argument from intelligibility: not a gap inside science but the ground beneath it.

"If God intervenes, doesn't that make science impossible?"
How you'll hear it
"Science needs uniformity. A meddling God ruins the experiment."
No — biblical miracles are rare, purposive signs against a backdrop of covenant regularity. A God faithful in the ordinary and meaningful in the extraordinary underwrites science rather than undermining it.
The longer answer
The worry imagines caprice — nature lurching unpredictably. Scripture promises the opposite: "while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest... shall not cease" (Gen 8:22); the fixed order is covenanted (Jer 33:25). Miracles are clustered, announced, interpreted, and vanishingly rare; no scientist's regression was ever skewed by them. Indeed the deeper point runs the other way: only on theism is there a reason to expect the uniformity science must assume. The naturalist borrows the stability; the Christian knows the One who promised it.

Question 15
"What about miracle claims in other religions?"
How you'll hear it
"Every religion has miracles. They can't all be true — so probably none are."
Weigh each claim on its evidence — that is the consistent standard. The resurrection is unusual among the world's miracle claims precisely in its early, multiple, public, falsifiable attestation.
The longer answer
The inference "many claims, therefore none true" would abolish history wholesale — conflicting accounts of battles do not prove no battles occurred. The Christian does not hold that every reported wonder is false-except-ours; God may act where he pleases, counterfeits exist, and most claims (in any tradition) are simply under-evidenced. The proper method is the historian's: earliness of sources, eyewitness proximity, multiplicity, hostile corroboration, cost to the witnesses. Run the resurrection through that sieve alongside any rival claim and the asymmetry is striking — which is why the case for Christianity rests there and not on miracle-counting.

Question 16
"Why doesn't God heal amputees?"
How you'll hear it
"Claimed healings are always ambiguous. One regrown limb would settle it."
The demand assumes God's purpose is to furnish on-demand proof. Jesus faced exactly this demand and refused it — pointing instead to the one decisive, public sign: his resurrection.
The longer answer
The question is rhetorically powerful but theologically confused: it treats miracles as utilities for skeptics rather than signs in redemptive history. Jesus healed many — and still "an evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign" (Matt 12:39); Abraham's reply to the rich man stands: "If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead" (Luke 16:31) — a sentence the actual resurrection went on to test. God has not promised healing-on-demand in this age; he has promised resurrection bodies in the next (1 Cor 15:42–44), where every amputee in Christ will be whole. Meanwhile the offered evidence is where it always was: the empty tomb.

Question 17
"Isn't religious experience just brain chemistry?"
How you'll hear it
"Stimulate the temporal lobe and people feel a presence. God is a neural glitch."
Every experience has neural correlates — including doing neuroscience. Correlation does not debunk; otherwise the scientist's own reasoning, with its brain signature, debunks itself.
The longer answer
If "your experience involves brain states, therefore its object is unreal" were valid, it would dissolve vision, memory, mathematics, and the argument itself — all brain-instantiated. The genetic fallacy lurks too: explaining how a belief arises does not settle whether it is true. Christians, who hold that we are embodied creatures (Course 10), expect experience of God to involve the brain he made. The truth of Christianity, in any case, never rested on private experiences but on public history — prophets, incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection — exactly where the examination belongs.

Question 18
"Does quantum physics leave room for miracles?"
How you'll hear it
"Maybe God acts through quantum indeterminacy — or maybe quantum weirdness proves anything can happen."
Be wary in both directions. Christian confidence in miracles rests on God's lordship over nature, not on gaps in physics — quantum or classical.
The longer answer
Quantum mechanics is a magnificent theory of the very small, and its interpretation is genuinely contested — but the apologist should not conscript it. "Quantum weirdness, therefore resurrections" is a non sequitur that real physicists will rightly puncture; and locating divine action inside indeterminacy quietly concedes the deistic picture, as if God needed a loophole in his own creation. The biblical ground is simpler and stronger: the One who upholds every law — deterministic or probabilistic — acts freely within his own work. Use quantum physics for what it honestly shows: that nature is stranger than common sense, and that confident pronouncements about what reality "obviously" permits have a short shelf life.

"How should a Christian student handle a hostile science classroom?"

Study hard, honour the discipline, learn the methodological/metaphysical distinction cold, ask good questions rather than fighting battles, and keep your anchor where it belongs — the resurrection.
The longer answer
Excellence is the first apologetic: a Christian who does superb science adorns the doctrine of creation. Learn to sort what the course actually demonstrates (data, mechanisms) from editorial naturalism, and answer the latter with questions — "was that established by an experiment?" — not speeches. Find the believing scientists in the field's history and the fellowship of Christians in the discipline now. Do not let one contested origins reading carry your whole faith into the lab; anchor on Christ crucified and risen, which no syllabus touches. And keep gentleness: your professor is an image-bearer using borrowed capital — order, intelligibility, the love of truth — that your worldview, not his, can fund.

"How does the science conversation lead to the gospel?"

Everything. The Reason behind the equations is a Person; the Person entered history; and the regularity science charts is what makes his resurrection legible as God's decisive sign.
The longer answer
The science conversation cleared the ground: naturalism is philosophy, the laws describe God's faithfulness, miracles cannot be ruled out in advance. But cleared ground is not good news. The gospel is that the Logos who upholds the cosmos became flesh, did signs that disclosed the kingdom, died under Pontius Pilate, and rose — the firstfruits of the renewed creation in which the groaning universe will be set free (Rom 8:19–21). Science studies the present order; the resurrection previews its mending. So the pivot is natural: from the intelligible heavens that declare his glory, to the empty tomb that declares his lordship, to the call that follows both — repent and believe.
