Advocate, World, Antichrists knowing him by obedience · loving not the world · the last hour
Chapter 2 moves from the message to its tests. If we sin we have an advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous, the propitiation for our sins; and we know that we know him when we keep his commandments and walk as he walked. The old-yet-new commandment is love; the warning is not to love the world that is passing away; and the hour is marked by many antichrists, met by the anointing that teaches the truth.
Overview of 1 John 2
The chapter unfolds in four movements. 2:1–6 presents Christ our advocate and propitiation, and the obedience-test of true knowledge. 2:7–14 renews the commandment to love and addresses the church as children, fathers, and young men. 2:15–17 warns against love of the world and its passing desires. 2:18–29 names the antichrists who went out from the community and points believers to the anointing and to abiding in the Son.
