I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life the Father's house and the promise of the Spirit
In John 14 Jesus comforts his troubled disciples on the eve of his death: he goes to prepare a place in the Father's house, reveals himself as the only way to the Father, shows that to see him is to see the Father, and promises "another Helper" — the Spirit of truth — who will be with them and in them forever.
Overview of John 14
14:1–14 answers the disciples' fear with a series of staggering claims. Jesus goes to prepare a place so that they may be where he is; he is himself "the way, and the truth, and the life," the only access to the Father; and "whoever has seen me has seen the Father," for he and the Father indwell one another. He promises that those who believe will do "greater works" as the mission goes worldwide, and that he will answer prayer offered in his name.
14:15–31 turns to the promise of the Spirit. The Father will give "another Helper" (Paraclete), the Spirit of truth, to abide forever; he will teach the disciples and bring Christ's words to remembrance. Father and Son make their home with those who love and obey Jesus. He leaves his own peace — "not as the world gives" — and, in the much-discussed word "the Father is greater than I," speaks of his return to the Father's glory, not of any inequality of nature.
