The High-Priestly Prayer the Son prays on the eve of the cross
John 17 is the longest recorded prayer of Jesus — the "High-Priestly Prayer" — offered as he turns to the cross. He prays first for his own glorification, then for the disciples he is leaving in the world, and finally for all who will believe through their word, that they may be one and at last be with him to see his glory.
Overview of John 17
Having finished the Farewell Discourse, Jesus lifts his eyes to heaven and prays. 17:1–5: the hour has come; he asks the Father to glorify the Son that the Son may glorify the Father, defining eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent, and asking to resume the glory he had with the Father before the world existed. 17:6–19: he prays for the disciples the Father gave him out of the world — that the Father would keep them, that they would not be taken out of the world but guarded from the evil one, and that they would be sanctified in the truth, for "your word is truth."
17:20–26: he widens the prayer to all who will believe through the apostolic word — including us — asking that they may all be one, as the Father and the Son are one, so that the world may believe; and that they may finally be with him to behold his glory, loved by the Father with the very love the Father has for the Son.
